Exhibitors at the recent Print World trade show and conference in Toronto reported strong sales, with at least one reporting it was its "best show ever."

That comment was from PDS Pressdown, while Sydney Stone also placed several "sold" signs on its equipment. Therm-O-Type, Deposit Photos, Docuplex Printing, Technifold, International Binding & Laminating Systems, EFI Proofing Solutions and TAS Films were just some of the many others reporting success at the show.

If using different social networks is like attending different types of functions, LinkedIn is "like a chamber of commerce meeting," while Twitter is a cocktail party and Facebook is a large community gathering, said Robert Burns, founder of Tourmalet Advisory Services.

"Where are your clients? Where are their prospects? That's where you have to be," he said about choosing between platforms. Speaking at Print World yesterday on how to use social media for business, Burns focused on LinkedIn.

While increasing services can be a daunting task, Jay Mandarino of C.J. Graphics thinks it’s worth the effort. "It's pretty hard to be a one-stop shop, but these days it seems that's what all the big companies want," he said in his Print World management seminar on value-added services.

Mandarino explored many actionable ways to increase profits and business; some of them were common examples including providing art and finishing; others were newer like direct marketing and printing on demand.

A veteran of ten Drupas, Frank Romano dubbed this year's exhibition "the Landa Drupa" during his Print World presentation about the highs and lows of the tech shown in Dusseldorf.

While the RIT professor emeritus predicted that "the new, humble Benny Landa" would make good on claims of a revolutionary new nanographic printing process by around 2016 (a Landa executive said earlier the first installs would be end of 2013), Romano told the crowd that printers looking to get into digital would have to consider buying other machines in the meantime.

Warren Werbitt doesn't rely on statistics to make a statement about the state of the industry.

Instead, Werbitt (who rose to online fame through a video praising print) speaks from the heart, and he didn't disappoint during his keynote speech at Print World in Toronto on Sunday morning.

It was decidedly the biggest story to come out of Drupa.

It’s nanography, a technology being introduced by Landa Digital. For the opening keynote at Print World in Toronto, Kristof Dekeukelaere, North American sales manager for Landa Digital, was on hand to speak to a Canadian audience about nanography for the first time.

Dekeukelaere said a projected $1 billion in orders were taken through letters of intent during Drupa for nanographic technology, with the first installs of the printers in development expected at the end of 2013.
